Ecosmic and Leonardo sign Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen partnership on space security

September 16th, 2026
For the start-up, alumni of ESA BIC Turin, the announcement marks a significant step in its work with a major European aerospace and defence player.

Ecosmic, a European space intelligence company specialising in the protection and defence of space assets, and Leonardo, a leading global aerospace, defence and security player, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand their partnership on space security.

The signing builds upon a contract already in execution, through which Ecosmic contributes its data processing and analysis capabilities as part of Leonardo’s broader space awareness activities. The MoU brings a longer-term perspective to this relationship, establishing a multi-year framework to evaluate further opportunities for cooperation.

The start-up's technology

Ecosmic is a European space intelligence start-up building software for space security. It supports institutional, defence and commercial users in understanding objects and activities in orbit and making informed decisions to protect critical space assets.

The young company has completed its incubation path in I3P, the Incubator of Politecnico di Torino, and in the ESA BIC Turin program, managed by I3P in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the European Space Agency (ESA), Politecnico di Torino and LINKS Foundation.

The new partnership brings together Ecosmic’s technical expertise in deriving valuable space intelligence from all kinds of data and Leonardo’s space infrastructure and extensive experience in aerospace, defence and security. Through the MoU, the companies intend to explore how their complementary capabilities can address evolving awareness needs in the space sector.

The future of the project

For Ecosmic, the announcement marks a significant step in its work with a major European aerospace and defence player. At the centre of Ecosmic’s strategy is VALKYR, its space intelligence platform designed to turn complex space data into operational intelligence. Designed to help users understand activity in orbit and support decisions concerning the security of space assets, VALKYR embodies Ecosmic’s ambition to become a core component of space security.

We are already working with Leonardo on the first requirements. This MoU gives us a framework to build on that foundation and explore a longer-term collaboration”, said Imane Marouf, Chief Commercial Officer of Ecosmic. “With VALKYR, our ambition isto give organisations the intelligence they need to understand and secure their operations in space. Working closely with industry players such as Leonardo helps us keep that ambition grounded in operational needs.

Marco Brancati, SVP Technology, Innovation & Systems Architecture of Leonardo Space Division, said: The selection of Ecosmic, a start-up originating from Leonardo and Telespazio’s T-TeC open innovation contest, highlights the value of investing in innovation and supporting emerging companies with high technological potential. The MoU is a further step allowing Ecosmic to contribute to Leonardo’s approach to the Space Domain Awareness development.

With this agreement, Ecosmic continues to strengthen its position within the European space ecosystem, supporting institutional and industrial partners in addressing the evolving challenges of space operations.
